With the vision in mind, “Education of the welfare of the Masses” Honourable Prin. M. R. Desai and Honourable Barr. Khardekar gave birth to an educational institute, “The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal” in 1945.The Institutes milestone in the excellence of higher education was set up a Gopal Krishna Gokhale College in rural area. Within a decade college became well known multi faculty institute in western Maharashtra.

During 1969-70 the growing need and demand of specialization Honourable Prin. M. R. Desai offered Geography as a Principal subject to B.A. final year students. Science then about 25 students have offered Geography as special subject for last year. Proof K. M. Keche, a well-known teacher was the Head of the Department at that time. Due course of time Shivaji University started P. G. Geography course, boosted the development of our Geography Department.

Mr. M. K. Sawant M.Sc. Geography was the first class holder in Shivaji University joined as a lecturer on 15th June 1973 and became in charge of the department in June 1974.The vision, inspiration & facilities offered by Honourable Prin. M. R. Desai sahib gave present set up of Geography Department with separate well equipped laboratory during 1979-1980.

The tradition of Honourable Prin. M. R. Desai sahib is continued through Hon. Secretary Late Shri Diliprao Desai and Honourable secretary prof. Jaykumarji Desai in the advancement of Geography Department, during nineties prin. C. D. Joshi's visualization and Prin. C. R. Godse's and Prin Mrs. S. V. Desai's support boosted the growth to the department. Prin, S. D. Sathe along with office administrative staff of the college are keen format of the Geography Department intact.

Meanwhile during 1969-1977 few Geography teachers as Mr. Prakash Sawant, Mr. Kadam, Mr. M. L. Kanshinde worked as a lecturer in the department for one or two years.

During 1977-78 Mr. S. G. Khadake, Mr. R. G. Phalke joined as a lecturer and Mr. M. B. Ingavale as a lab. Attendant Simultaneously growth of Geography Junior wing witnessed addition of three more lecturer Mr. A. U. Patil, Mr. S.N. More. & Mr. V. A. Pawar. In the academic year 2006-2007 Mr. S. A. Menashi, Mr. S. K. Patil, Mr. S. A. Patil, Mrs. S. A. Patil joined as a lecturer for senior wing. All the staff members of Geography Department are working sincerely in keeping academic standard and scholarly base intact,  outcome is Geography become first choice among students.
